Poem

Plastic Shoes

Black and white from K-Mart
I hate my plastic shoes
Two for twenty dollars
Poor girl blues
Plastic soles are slippery
Leather shoes are real
Falling down in crosswalks
Afraid to walk down hills
Make them stick with duct tape
Another day on foot
Poor girl dreams of leather shoes
To help her feet stay put.
Tomorrow will be better,
She runs but can’t escape
The city owns the poor girl,
Today she buys more tape.
