Cardboard Boxes

(poem)

You arrived in a dress that didn’t match your socks
delightfully demure
unsure
the smell of coconut and fresh corn still lingered
in your hair
and fear
trembled hidden your heart.

A smile, cool as shade
carried in the small pocket of your cotton dress
made your lover want to keep you safe
and only the faintest whisper of ancient bamboo
Sighing like an old woman
kept you from looking back.
